New Delhi: The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Ankush Narang, visited a site near Majlis Park metro station in the Civil Lines zone, allegedly used for dumping waste, on Saturday. An AAP councillor claimed that the site was turned into a landfill by the MCD. “The entire MCD waste is being dumped at this new site and the development is known to the senior officials. The stench from this heap has made life unbearable for locals,” said Narang, accusing the BJP of betraying Delhiites who were promised a cleaner and livable city. He was joined by former AAP councillor from the area, Ajay Sharma, and other leaders during the inspection. “BJP used to talk about removing the three existing garbage mountains in Delhi. But instead of eliminating them, it has created a fourth one. Garbage, silt, construction and demolition waste are all being dumped here. MCD is no longer sending waste to the existing sites — it is building a new dump yard altogether,” he added, pointing out that the zone comes under the jurisdiction of mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, who is also the area councillor. He announced that he would write letters to the chief minister, mayor, and MCD commissioner to demand the immediate removal of this fourth garbage mountain. “In just one month, this site has piled up waste 8 to 9 feet high,” he declared. Raising further concerns, Narang noted the proximity of the dump to the Outer Ring road and the metro station. An MCD official informed that the site belongs to PWD and it is dumping the silt here. Local junk dealers are also dumping their waste. “There might be municipal waste also being dumped here, but that is little in quantity. We are dumping our silt waste at the landfill, regular receipts are issued for them and we are keeping a regular track on its dumping,” said the official.
