Court clears 6 in 2-decade-old housing loan ‘fraud’

New Delhi: A Delhi court has acquitted six people in a case of alleged irregularities in housing loans sanctioned by Allahabad Bank’s Wazirpur branch over two decades ago, citing lack of evidence. Special Judge Jyoti Kaler, in an Oct 6 order, said the Central Bureau of Investigation failed to prove charges of conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption beyond reasonable doubt. The case, registered in 2004, alleged that former bank officer VK Chibber, then in charge of retail banking at the Wazirpur branch, conspired with private individuals to sanction housing loans on forged property papers, causing a Rs 77.6 lakh loss to the bank. Granting the benefit of doubt, the court acquitted Rajan Arora, his wife Sunita, Vinay Kumar Goel, his wife Vaibhavi and two others — Arvind Goel and Bhushan Dev Chawla — noting that proceedings against the latter two had abated due to their deaths. The accused were linked to three housing loans sanctioned between May and August 2003 for properties in Delhi’s Shalimar Village and Old Gobindpura. The court also noted that co-accused in the same case were acquitted in 2021 on identical evidence and set aside charges under IPC Section 174A.
