MCD approves installation of ingesta plant at Ghazipur slaughterhouse | Delhi News



New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi has told National Green Tribunal that its standing committee has approved the installation of an ingesta plant at Delhi’s lone slaughterhouse in Ghazipur, which had been shut briefly in 2022 for flouting environmental norms.MCD said that after the work order has been issued and it will take three to six months to complete the plant’s installation.The ingesta plant helps in handling large quantities of paunch waste and dung generated at the slaughterhouse. The senior counsel appearing for MCD has submitted that the “meeting of the standing committee was held on July 16”, when it approved the proposal and the work order will be issued in two weeks.The counsel said that on the issuance of the work order and the installation of the plant will be completed in three to six months, said the bench headed by Justice Prakash Shrivastava in an order dated July 30.The bench directed MCD to file minutes of the meeting and the work order along with a progress report within eight weeks. The matter will next be heard on Oct 30.In May 2022, the Ghazipur slaughterhouse was shut down after Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) withdrew consent for its operation for the violation of environmental norms. On July 6, 2022, DPCC permitted the abattoir to reopen on NGT’s directive to fulfil norms in a time-bound manner, including installing the ingesta and RO plants.The RO plant was installed by the concessionaire of the slaughterhouse on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.After multiple efforts, MCD was successful in identifying an agency for running the ingesta plant project last year. “But the project was costing around Rs 6 crore and it needed approval from the standing committee,” an official earlier said.The abattoir has a capacity of slaughtering 15,000 animals per day in three shifts. It became operational in 2009 after the old slaughterhouse at Idgah was shifted to Ghazipur.
