Haze Over Readings As AQI ‘Improves’ Further

New Delhi: A grey haze continued to hang over the city on Wednesday, though its air quality improved slightly from that on Tuesday. The AQI stood at 279, better than 294 a day earlier. Both the figures fall in the poor category. None of the 39 stations in the city recorded readings in the severe bracket.Wazirpur and Bawana were the most polluted stations, both with an AQI of 349, followed by Vivek Vihar (342). North-westerly winds, blowing with speeds of up to 10 kmph, may have helped a bit to clear the air, an official of IMD said. However, the haze is likely to remain during morning hours over the next five days. The air quality is predicted to remain in the poor bracket on Thursday and Friday as well. “However, it is likely to worsen to very poor on Nov 1,” according to Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi. The share of emission from stubble burning in the city’s air pollution reached a season-high of 5.9% on Tuesday, up from 4.3% on Monday. The biggest contributor to PM2.5 was the ‘others’ category, or sources unaccounted for, from outside the city (22.6%), followed by 20.2% from its own transport sector. Around 7% was estimated to have emanated from UP’s Muzaffarnagar. The maximum temperature was 29 degree Celsius, two notches below normal. The minimum was recorded at 18.2°C, two degrees above normal.
