New Delhi: Delhi govt has appointed 5,346 trained graduate teachers (TGTs) for classes VI to X in govt and municipal (MCD) schools across the city. A post from the chief minister’s official X handle said the move aims to improve teaching quality and give students focused academic support, in line with the Viksit Delhi vision for quality education. Gupta added that the decision would strengthen school infrastructure and improve learning outcomes across Delhi’s public schools. TGTs are professionals with a graduate degree in a subject and a qualification such as B.Ed. They play a key role in secondary education by bridging the gap between primary and senior secondary levels. Teacher shortages have long affected Delhi’s govt and MCD schools. Experts say that nearly 10,000 teaching positions remain vacant in these schools, disrupting the student–teacher ratio and impacting classroom learning. This has also forced many schools to rely heavily on guest or contractual teachers and has increased the workload on existing staff, who often handle multiple classes or subjects beyond their specialisation. The shortage is most severe at the middle and secondary levels, where subject expertise is crucial for conceptual learning. The announcement follows the govt’s allocation of ₹100 crore in the 2025–26 Delhi budget to establish 75 CM Shri Schools. The national commission for protection of child rights also highlighted the shortage in its 2024 report on Delhi’s government schools.
