Brother-sister duo from Thak-Thak gang nabbed for chain snatchings

New Delhi: Police have apprehended a brother-sister duo linked to Thak-Thak gang for a spate of chain-snatching incidents across south Delhi. The accused, a 24-year-old woman and her 17-year-old brother from Dakshinpuri, were allegedly involved in multiple cases reported from Malviya Nagar, Kotla Mubarakpur and Kartavya Path. According to police, the siblings — nicknamed “Bunty and Babli” — mostly targeted women walking alone. The minor drove a two-wheeler while his sister, riding pillion, snatched gold chains before they sped away. In one instance recently, they snatched a woman’s chain while she was taking photographs with her family on Mansingh Road.Following a series of similar complaints, police examined CCTV footage that showed a young man and woman on a grey two-wheeler. “Their route was traced to Dakshinpuri and with local intelligence both were identified and apprehended from Pushp Vihar in Saket,” said DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan. Police recovered four gold chains, weighing three-nine grams, and the two-wheeler used in the crimes. During questioning, the duo confessed to several snatchings across South and New Delhi districts.Officials said the siblings, both drug addicts, belong to a family with a criminal background. Their father, Venkateshwar, a member of the Thak-Thak gang, was involved in a Rs 40-lakh robbery in Uttar Pradesh in 2018, during which he allegedly shot at policemen, killing one. He was injured in the encounter and is now wheelchair-bound. Police said the duo resorted to crime to fund their drug habit. Their involvement in at least four cases has been confirmed, while efforts are on to trace more offences and recover additional stolen jewellery.
