SUV-Truck Collision Kills Two Cousins

New Delhi: Two cousins on their way to Murthal for dinner died after their SUV collided with a truck and caught fire in outer Delhi’s Rani Bagh on Thursday. Police have caught the truck driver. The deceased were identified as Henry (20) and Dipanshu Chandela (21). They were BBA students. Both were from west Delhi. Henry’s family lives in Meera Bagh and Dipanshu in Paschim Vihar. The fire department, which got a call around 3.13 am, sent three fire tenders and 18 fighters to the site near Madhuban Chowk. They managed to bring the blaze under control. A senior police officer said the cousins left their homes around 2.40 am. About 20 minutes later, their SUV collided with the truck. The impact was severe and the SUV was dragged for approximately 500-600 metres before the truck came to a halt. By the time the truck stopped, the car was already ablaze. A police officer said the front of the vehicle was completely mangled. The bodies were charred. “The SUV was registered in the name of Henry’s father but Dipanshu was driving it. Neither of their families was aware of their plan to go out for dinner,” the police officer added. The truck driver, Digambar, later told police that “he was driving from Mundka to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar when the collision occurred. He claimed that other motorists on the route alerted him that an SUV had got wedged to the rear of the truck,” the officer said. Police said they were investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, and if speeding was the reason for it. Police will conduct a mechanical inspection of the vehicle to ascertain why the SUV burst into flames. Henry was doing his BBA course at a university in Pune, while Dipanshu was studying in a college in Delhi. “We have heard that the brother of one of the deceased also died in a road accident earlier, but we are verifying this,” a police officer said. The fatal accident happened a day after three people, who were on a motorcycle, died in north west Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar while returning from Murthal.
